Underground Conveyors

As every miner knows, it’s a different world underground, and Continental knows that requires solving some very specialized problems for difficult and harsh conditions.

Continental has worked hand in hand with miners worldwide to perfect conveying methods that have proven to be highly reliable – and that contribute significantly to overall productivity levels.

These contributions include the development of specialized conveyor systems, drives of extremely large horsepower, and high-capacity systems and components for the industry’s most advanced longwall operations.

The Crawler Mounted Transfer Station from Continental simplifies continuous haulage. Continuous haulage conveyor systems typically include a continuous miner followed by a series of short, chain bridge-type conveyors, as well as a section belt that contains extremely low conveyor structure, commonly referred to in the industry as Long-John or Low-Low structure.

These systems have evolved dramatically over past the 20 years, and are a credit to innovative engineering and the industry’s technical expertise. There are, however, areas of the continuous haulage system’s performance that leave room for improvement. The most notable would be a better solution for the functional relationship between the Low-Low structure and the out-by conveyor system, which has long been a source of frustration and expense.

The Continental CMTS incorporates the drive and take-up pulleys for the Low-Low conveyor, as well as a tail pulley for the main out-by section conveyor into a fully articulated mobile transfer. This arrangement is made possible (and practical) through the use of a proprietary technology that ensures that the Low-Low belt and the out-by belt train properly, regardless of the angle between these two belts. This represents a significant capability that is clearly one of the most advanced features of this important mining breakthrough.

The CMTS, with its mobility and alignment capabilities, provides an active, yet efficient, transition between these very different haulage lines, and in doing so improves the economics and performance of this area of continuous haulage technology.

Fixed Fill Fluid Coupling

Continental® offers a full line of fixed filled fluid coupling drives. These drives are for simple soft start device and work with all voltages of motors. Horsepower range from 25 HP to 1000 HP and can be supplied as a single, dual, triple or quad arrangement.

 

Controlled Fill Fluid Coupling

Continental® controlled fill fluid coupling drives allow consistent extended start times regardless of load and are designed to work with medium voltage motors. These drives are excellent for use with conveyors requiring boosters. Horsepowers range from 400 HP to 2000 HP and can be supplied as a single, dual, triple or quad arrangement.

 

DC

Continental® DC drives allow consistent extended start times regardless of load. These drives are excellent for use with conveyors requiring boosters. Horsepowers range from 300 HP to 600 HP and can be supplied as a single, dual, triple or quad arrangement.

 

Low-Voltage VFD

Continental® low voltage VFD drives allow consistent extended start times regardless of load and are designed to work with low voltage motors. These drives are excellent for use with conveyors requiring boosters. Horsepowers range from 100 HP to 800 HP and can be supplied as a single, dual, triple or quad arrangement.

 

Medium-Voltage VFD

Continental® medium voltage drives allow consistent extended start times regardless of load and are designed to work with medium-voltage motors. These drives are excellent for use with conveyors requiring boosters. Horsepowers range from 800 HP to 2000 HP and can be supplied as a single, dual, triple or quad arrangement.

Tripper Booster Drives

Continental tripper booster drives provide smooth start-up and shut down operations with full tension control on extremely long single-flight panel conveyors. Continental tripper booster drive systems are able to respond to varying load conditions while maintaining a stable operating system. These drives can have a significant impact on reducing downtime and improving productivity on many operating conveyor systems.

Multi-Purpose Drives

Multi-Purpose Drives

The savings in increased availability of the Continental multi-purpose drive could pay for the unit in less than a year. It usually takes two full shifts (sixteen hours) to move and set up an ordinary drive. The Continental multi-purpose, flange-connected drive can be ready in just a few hours. Its low three-foot profile and compact design allows the Continental multi-purpose drive to be used in some of the lowest seams. It is well suited to mine development applications using continuous miners.  The Continental multi-purpose drive is available from stock with dual-150hp drives for 42"/48" belt widths. (Alternate configurations are available.)

Continental® drives and drive control methods are legendary for their reliable performance at the industry's toughest installations. Continental® Large Drives are currently incorporated into some of the most productive longwall coal mines in the world.

 

Idlers & Components

 

Continental offers and variety of idler styles and designs. LR-C idlers are available in HC, H-Plus and HD designs. LR-C idlers are used primarily for lighter loads and smaller belt widths. OR-C idlers are available in HC, H-Plus, HD and SDX designs. OR-C idlers are utilized for heavier loads and larger belt widths. Both designs offer the advantage of offset center rolls that eliminate roll gap and, by virtue of their design, are lower profile components.

 

In-line idlers are also available in HC, H-Plus, HD, HX and SDX. Catenary idlers are a time saving option, with their quick and easy installation and removal from the belt system. Catenary idlers are available in HC, H-Plus, HD and SDX designs.

 

Return rolls are available in flat return and V-return designs. Flat return rolls are the standard. V-return return rolls are used primarily on belt systems to help train the return side of the belt. Drop brackets for flat return rolls are available in several styles and drop lengths.

 


Structure

 

Mine Duty Structure

With the introduction of high production longwall mining many years ago, the need developed for conveyor structure that was sturdier, yet still portable enough to be installed quickly. Continental mine duty rigid conveyor, using a structural channel side-member with boltless construction, was designed to fill this need. This structure uses the same idler as our wire rope conveyor to permit usage of existing components, and is available in belt widths from 30in. to 84in.

Continental has supplied wire rope conveyors for applications that vary from coal mining to overland systems for high tonnage bulk handling projects such as fill for interstate highways and dam construction. This product is highly portable and is economical in cost.

Catenary Structure

Longwall mining requires conveyor structure that is extremely portable due to the rapid rate of extraction during the longwall retreat. This structure must be very rugged in order to withstand the heavy loading encountered in longwall mining. Continental Conveyor’s catenary structure is designed to meet this need. This structure uses rigid side frames made of round tubing. This structure is also designed to minimize the number of loose parts in order to keep losses to a minimum while moving from one mining panel to another. The portability and ruggedness of the structure makes it suitable for any portable conveyor need.

 


Take-Ups

 

Constant Tension Winch

Constant tension winches are an alternative to the traditional sheaved cylinder take-up designs. Greater line pull, constant and faster response and longer take-up travel are the advantages of the winch design. This revolutionary technology enabled Continental to furnish take up systems without sheaves and hydraulic cylinders. With a belt capacity ranging from 40ft. to 1500ft. and line pull ranging from 25,000 lbs. to 100,000 lbs., the Continental constant tension winch is capable of providing your belt tensioning requirements on lengthy, high-tension applications. Hydraulic Take-Up

Any conveyor system is only as productive as its take-up. Continental hydraulic take-up sections are designed to pull the slack out of the belt for a smooth conveyor start, regardless of the loading condition. Our take-up sections are designed to withstand rigorous mining conditions with minimum downtime. Continental take-up sections are available in standard arrangements ranging from 10’ to 80’ of travel.

Accessories

From our time-saving belt winders/splice stations and pinch roll drives to our impact beds that extend belt life, Continental accessories can save you time and money.

 

Belt Winder

The Continental® belt winder simplifies and improves the control of your belting when you are adding to or removing belt from your system. It incorporates a patented pinch roll drive arrangement that delivers a constant winding speed and pull to the belt roll. The pivotal spool arrangement allows the spool of belt to be rotated 90 degrees in either direction. Lift cylinders make removal and installation operations significantly easier.

 

Splice Station

The Continental® splice station is a useful tool when adding or removing belt from the conveyor. The splice table is used in conjunction with the belt winder to provide a convenient work station for rapid splice installments or belt repair. Continental® splice tables can also be customized for a wide range of accessories to meet the customer's specific requirements.

 

Clean Up Conveyor

The unique Continental® Clean-up Conveyor effectively eliminates the cost of cleaning up dribble from underneath the belt discharge. It uses a shuttle car type flight conveyor concept, incorporating a control module that permits adjustable intermittent operation for fully automatic clean up of transfer spillage. This unit is built "Continental® Tough" and can endure the punishment associated with even the most severe mining applications.

 

Belt Turnover

The unique Continental® belt turnover system is designed to minimize material buildup and spillage on the return side of your conveyor system. By turning your conveyor belt over and allowing the clean side of your belt to contact the return rolls, material clean-up on return rolls is minimized allowing for a more efficient running conveyor system.

 

Belt Storage Units

Increased production afforded by longwall mining systems has had a major impact on the cost of material mined. However, the full potential of a longwall unit cannot be realized without the utilization of an effective, trouble-free belt storage unit.

The Continental belt storage unit consists of a bolted construction rail system, stationary pulley cluster, rolling carriage and a winch assembly. The rugged framework and carriages are substantial enough to withstand rigorous mining conditions and at the same time still portable enough for movement between installations. For relocation, the winch and movable carriage are removed and the frame is disassembled into sizes conducive to your mining environment. After reassembly, the wire rope is reattached to the carriage and the unit is ready to operate. Because of its modular design, no tedious reducer/motor/winch realignment is necessary for the winch component.

The carriage and belt supports are designed with V-grooved wheels. These wheels move along inverted angles that are secured to heavy duty I-beams and automatically drop return belt supports (drop-off carriages) at set intervals along this unit as belt is stored. The drop-off carriages are then automatically retracted as the carriage moves back. As of the longwall face retreats, the main haulage systems must be shortened. This procedure is completely automatic and requires no operator. All units have manual settings to facilitate belt splicing and maintenance Continental belt storage units are available in single or multiple lap configurations. Our units can be designed to meet the specific needs of your conveyor system. All-Electric™ constant tension winches, used in conjunction with belt storage units, provide carriage travel in excess of 1’ /sec. and system response time of 20 milliseconds.
